The running of a Mid-Canterbury cropping farm has transitioned from father to son, but it's still hard for Syd Worsfold to step back and watch Earl take over the reins of family's Greendale property.

After more than 30 years at the helm, the champion wheat grower is on hand to advise, debate and share his lifetime of knowledge. "Sometimes I take it on board, other times I choose to ignore it," Earl says, grinning.

The Worsfold's combine harvester has been busy recently. Golden paddocks of wheat, oats and barley have all been collected, as well as the white clover, radish and grass crops that are grown for seeds.

Syd says the farm has always grown excellent cereals. "The milling wheat has a very hard and quick finish on it, which gives it a good quality that the mills are looking for."
