An Auckland woman has accidentally found her late grandfather's diary, which revealed that he was part of a secret society that helped overthrow China's last imperial dynasty. Seventy-two-year-old Jennifer Dalgleish was given the diary on a trip to her birthplace in Trinidad in the West Indies. The grandfather, Zhou Gaochao, left his hometown in Guangdong in South China at age 33 in 1909, and never returned. He was sent to South America by a secret society called Hung Moon and eventually settled in Trinidad. Hung Moon helped Sun Yat-sen in the 1911 Revolution that forced the last emperor Pu Yi to abdicate and establish the Republic of China. Because of the strict regulations of the society, Mr Zhou counldn't tell his family what he was doing. Jennifer Dalgleish and her husband Tony told our reporter Chen Liu about their discovery.
