Sonny Bill Williams pushes plight of refugees to Aus PM

From First Up, 5:10 am on 31 May 2021

Sporting great Sonny Bill Williams is trying to ensure that the plight of refugees detained on Nauru and Papua New Guinea is not kept off the agenda as Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison meets with Jacinda Ardern this week. 239 refugees and asylum seekers are currently being held in Australia's offshore prisons, with another 12-hundred in some form of detention or on 'final-departure-bridging-visas' in Australia. It comes as a resettlement deal with the United States expires, leaving the refugees with little hope of finding sanctuary. Williams has teamed up with Amnesty International and former Ozzie soccer star Craig Foster to follow Mr Morrison on his New Zealand tour, holding parallel media events to call on the Australian Government to accept New Zealand's offer to resettle 150 refugees each year. If successive Australian governments had accepted this offer when it was first made in 2013, they're pointing out that most of them would have been settled in New Zealand by now. Our producer Matthew Theunissen spoke with Sonny Bill Williams and Craig Foster, who began by explaining what they're hoping to achieve.
