On the 14th of September 1972, a petition calling for active recognition of te reo Maori was presented to Parliament containing over 30-thousand signatures. The petition, which was organised by Maori and Pakeha students, paved the way for the revitalisation of te reo in Aotearoa. This morning the government announced that the 50th anniversary of the event in 2022 will be given tier 1 status - something that's reserved for major events that significantly changed the country. Nathan Rarere asked Minister for Maori Development Willie Jackson why it is important that the presentation of the petition is recognised.
