Cancer patients out of pocket in order to survive

From Midday Report, 12:15 pm on 28 April 2022

Every year more than a thousand New Zealand cancer patients can't get drugs that are readily available across the Tasman.

The report by the Cancer Control Agency, Te Aho o te Kahu, was aimed at measuring the gap that patient groups have been fighting to close for years.

Heidi MacRae was diagnosed with an aggressive form of Triple-Negative Breast Cancer last September.

Since then she's had to self-fund Keytruda - and while that's not a drug that's funded in Australia, she knows how it feels to not have the life-saving drugs you need available.

She spoke to Māni Dunlop.
