Solar panels for marae will reduce costs, improve resilience

From Midday Report, 12:44 pm on 1 September 2022

Marae and rural communities will be able to install solar panels to help save money and provide clean and locally generated power as part of small scale government funded projects.

The projects are one half of the $28 million Māori and Public Housing Renewable Energy Fund which gives targeted support to households with insecure access to power, or who are experiencing energy hardship.

One of the recipients, Te Poari o Ngātiwai, will install solar panels on eight marae along the eastern coast of Te Tai Tokerau, creating a virtual network to support rural households

Ngātiwai trust board chief executive Huhana Lyndon spoke to Māni Dunlop.
