Weather: Nelson braces for sting in Gita's tail

From Morning Report, 6:40 am on 19 February 2018

Nelson's mayor is warning residents to prepare as cyclone Gita heads towards the city. Just a few weeks ago homes were flooded and debris scattered up and down the coastline when cyclone Fehi hit.

MetService says the west coast of the lower North Island and the top of the South Island are in for a hammering when Gita hits. Civil defence is warning people in its path to prepare for power cuts, road closures and possible evacuation.

Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management director Sarah Stuart-Black says people should have grab-bags with essentials such as clothes, food and water, and a plan for where to go if they're evacuated. Nelson Mayor Rachel Reese tells Guyon Espiner about preparations the city is making.
