Moa bones must not be sold on Trade Me - former museum curator

From Morning Report, 6:46 am on 1 August 2019

A former museum curator is calling on Trade Me to put an immediate stop to the sale of moa bones.

Conservation Minister Eugenie Sage is looking at tightening the rules on the sale of bones from the extinct birds to stop sites being looted.

Any found on protected land or archeological sites cannot be sold but there is no barrier to selling bones found on private land.

Trade Me says it will allow moa bones to be sold so long as it remains lawful. But former curator Mike Dickison told RNZ's Amy Williams that museums have long been urging the government to halt the trade and Trade Me shouldn't have to wait for the law to change to act.
