Brett Hudson on proposed Firearms Prohibition Orders

From Morning Report, 6:46 am on 12 November 2019

National's police spokesperson Brett Hudson says the Government shouldn't wait for public feedback on Firearms Prohibition Orders.

He says a previously rejected Member's Bill from 2018 is ready and should be introduced into the Arms Legislation already before Parliament.

He told Corin Dann he thinks the Labour Party is adapting an old piece of legislation from the National Party to suit itself.

This work was actually done a couple of years ago. It was the work of a Select Committee in the last Parliament that recommended Firearms Prohibition Orders.

"National campaigned on those, Labour didn't. We put a Bill together. Despite saying they're in favour of public safety (Police Minister) Nash and Labour voted it down last year. Now they're just redirecting what is our idea and trying to say it's theirs."

Mr Hudson said he wasn't concerned about the human rights concerns as the orders would only apply to a small amount of people.

"Firearms Prohibition orders are intended to be a discretionary thing that the police commissioner to can use to ensure that firearms are kept out of the hands of the most dangerous people.

"That is not anticipated by anyone's measure, ours or this new discussion document, that they would be broadly applied over large swathes of New Zealand or New Zealanders."
