Toxic gas ban delayed by more than a year

An environment watchdog has delayed by more than a year a decision to effectively ban the use of a toxic and environmentally damaging gas used to treat logs for export.

In October 2010, the Environmental Protection Authority told the logging industry it had 10 years to stop releasing the significantly ozone-depleting gas methyl bromide into the atmosphere.

But under pressure from the industry the agency has granted a number of extensions - most recently last month - infuriating environmentalists and some living near ports.
