From Morning Report, 8:20 am on 1 November 2021

New Zealand's first woman Governor General - Dame Catherine Tizard - has died, aged 90.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has described her as a trailblazer for women in public life. Dame Catherine became Governor General in 1990.

Before that, she was the first woman to be elected Mayor of Auckland in 1983 - beginning the first of three terms in charge.

Kim Hill spoke to Mike Williams, the former Labour Party president who managed Dame Catherine's successful mayoral campaigns and went on to become a close friend.
