The government is promising to boost the number of front line police officers and address gang violence as part of a hefty pre-Budget law and order package.

It's investing more than $560 million over four years into the police and wants to ensure there is at least once cop for every 480 New Zealanders.

One hundred million dollars will go towards combating gangs and organised crime, while $185 million will be spent over four years expanding the police's Tactical Response Model.

The government's also promising to increase the number of frontline officers, to ensure there is at least one cop for every 480 people.

National Party police spokesman Mark Mitchell spoke to Susie Ferguson.
