Pūwhakamua: Prisoner speaks about leaving gang

From Morning Report, 6:19 am on 12 December 2022

An Auckland prison says a programme led by a former offender is reducing gang membership, and crime behind bars.

One-hundred and fifty prisoners are participating in Pūwhakamua at the Serco facility Kohuora, also known as Wiri Men's prison.

The participants have agreed to leave their patches at the door, and recognise whakapapa instead.

Crime has dropped from a peak of 16 instances in a month last year, to just four.

This high security prisoner, serving a 13-year sentence, spoke to reporter Sam Olley about putting down his patch.
