US military shoots down suspected Chinese spy balloon

The US military is searching for the remnants of a suspected Chinese spy balloon after it was shot down over the weekend.

Officials say they grew concerned about the balloon when it drew close to the US mainland and hovered over missile sites.

China had expressed regret for the overflight, claiming it was a weather balloon that had been blown off course.

China has accused the US of overreacting, and has also confirmed it owns another balloon spotted over Latin America at the weekend.
