Australian 'winged wētā' gains foothold in NZ

From Morning Report, 7:41 am on 22 November 2023

An invasive, Australian rival to New Zealand's ancient wētā grasshopper is slowly gaining a foothold in some of the country's warmer regions.

First recorded in 1990, the "winged wētā" has small, transparent wings similar to a cicada and grows to between 30 and 37 millimetres - noticeably smaller than our own native species.

New Zealand entomologist and former TV host Ruud Kleinpaste spoke to Corin Dann.
