Advocates call for prisoners' voting rights

From Morning Report, 7:52 am on 17 January 2024

The Government has already ruled out granting voting rights to all prisoners, following the release of the Independent Electoral Review final report.

The panel made 143 recommendations, one of which was allowing all prisoners to vote and stand in elections, regardless of how long their sentence is.

Since 2020, those sentenced to less than three years in prison have again been allowed to vote, after the National Party revoked that right in 2010.

President of the Canterbury Howard League for Penal Reform, Cosmo Jeffrey, spoke to Ben Strang.
