Direct link between hate speech and hate crime: report

From Morning Report, 8:46 am on 2 April 2024

An Islamic organisation wants to know why the Government appears to be ditching the recommendation of the Christchurch mosque terror attacks royal commission of inquiry to outlaw "hate speech" having to do with religious people.

The Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand has just released a report revealing what the umbrella group says is the "direct link" between hate speech and hate crime.

The Government says it will study the new report, but in the meantime, as per the coalition agreement, it will not be introducing any new legislation stifling what it says is "free speech".

The Association's Royal Commission Committee chair Abdur Razzaq spoke to Ingrid Hipkiss.
