Filmmaker and composer John Carpenter is known to many as of Masters of the Horror. His notable works include cult classics Halloween, The Thing, and They Live. Carpenter's father was a music teacher, sparking his early interest in making music. This interest played a major role in his career: he composed the music to most of his films.

Carpenter's eerie synth stylings have influenced a swathe of synth acts, which can be heard on modern shows such as the highly popular series Stranger Things.

Denver Grenell joins the show to talk us through the influence of Carpenter, and share a few recommendations for spooky season.

10:17 Locals face isolation during surprise SH6 closure

Two months on after devastating floods caused extensive damage in Nelson, the rippling effects are still being felt. The stretch of State Highway 6 between Nelson and Blenheim is to be closed for repairs, which will severely hamper locals and business owners for around seven weeks. 

New mayor Nick Smith has been at a community meeting this evening, he joins the show to discuss the outcome.

10:30 Taranaki Cricket scores first female president

Thelma Luxton has become the first female president in Taranaki Cricket's 127-year history. Her appointment follows more than 50 years manning the score books for the Taranaki side, as she replaces long-serving president Neville Frampton - who held the position 26 years.

Luxton joins the show to share her vision for the club.

10:45 Bonsai the antithesis of our fast-paced society

A leading proponent of the art of bonsai in Aotearoa, Joy Morton has been working with the tiny trees for 54 years. her Dunedin backyard and shed are home to more than 100 trees, some of which are decades old.

Joy is currently attending the ninth World Bonsai Convention, a virtual get-together of bonsai practioners around the globe who shared their techniques and dive into panel discussions.

Joy is also a founding member of the The Otago Bonsai Society, which is holding an exhibition at Dunedin Community Gallery until 24 October.
