8:15 Neil Gemmell

Professor Neil Gemmell is the AgResearch Chair in Reproduction and Genomics at the University of Otago and the inaugural Director of the Centre for Reproduction and Genomics. He is also principal investigator at the Allan Wilson Centre for Molecular Ecology & Evolution, leading a team that is sequencing the DNA of the tuatara, one of the most evolutionary significant animal genomes in the world. He was last on the programme in 2008, talking about the platypus.

 

9:00 Dick Taylor

Dick Taylor was an original guitarist and bass guitarist for the Rolling Stones before leaving the band for art school. He formed The Pretty Things in 1963, and left the band in 1968 after their recording of their fourth album, and the first rock opera, S.F. Sorrow. He lives on the Isle of Wight, and continues to perform with a reunited Pretty Things. The band will return to New Zealand for one concert in Auckland on 11 December, their first visit since they were banned from the country after their infamous 1965 tour.

Mary Anne Franks is Associate Professor of Law at the University of Miami, where she teaches family law, criminal law, and criminal procedure. Her other research and teaching interests include cyberlaw, discrimination, free speech, and law and gender.

 

10:05 Playing Favourites with Parris Goebel

Parris Goebel is co-owner and manager of The Palace Dance Studio in Penrose and lead choreographer for all-female dance crew ReQuest, the 2010 World Hip-Hop Dance Champions. She was also choreographer for Jennifer Lopez’s 2012 world tour. Parris is the ambassador for the Southside Arts Festival (12 October to 11 November), at which she will lead a free dance workshop, judge a hip-hop collaboration, and perform in an evening showcase with her dance crews from The Palace (on 13 October), and perform with ReQuest at the Cult Couture event on (20 October) before departing for Montreal to join rehearsals for the Cirque Du Soleil tribute to the life and music of Michael Jackson.

Richard Heinberg is a Senior Fellow of the Post Carbon Institute, and is widely regarded as one of the world’s most effective communicators of the urgent need to transition away from fossil fuels. He is the author of ten books, most recently The End of Growth: Adapting to Our New Economic Reality (New Society, ISBN: 9780865716957). He is visiting New Zealand for presentations in Auckland (30 September, University of Auckland Business School), Hamilton (1 October, Hamilton City Council Lounge) and Tauranga (1 October, Baycourt Exhibition Hall).
