A dividend from Wellington International Airport Ltd has helped Wellington City Council avoid making drastic cuts in other areas to save money.

Last month, the council asked chief executive Garry Poole to find $1 million in savings.

The council says the savings have come from a dividend of $8.3 million from the airport company, of which it owns a third.
