The Government has reimbursed Christchurch City Council $31 million for earthquake costs met by its Civil Defence unit.

A total of $208 million has now been paid to the council for emergency response costs related to the September 2010 and February, June and December 2011 earthquakes.

Civil Defence Minister Nikki Kaye says the money goes towards costs incurred in accommodating, transporting, feeding and clothing displaced people.

She says it will also cover the costs of essential infrastructure repair and other response costs, such as the supply of chemical toilets and portaloos.
