Man in custody after stand-off in Blenheim

7:48 pm on 30 January 2013

A man who police say threatened to detonate explosives while barricaded in a Blenheim motel room is in custody.

Police say the man, who had been arrested on another matter, shut himself in a motel and threatened to detonate explosives on Wednesday afternoon, causing part of Main Street to be shut off for a time.

Inspector Ross Grantham told Radio New Zealand's Checkpoint programme on Wednesday the man agreed to come out after speaking to police negotiators, and there was no sign of explosives in the motel room.

Mr Grantham says the man had some issues that he wanted to discuss with police.

He is custody after being treated for injuries in hospital and discharged. Mr Grantham did not say what the injuries were.

The man will appear in court on Thursday.
