Hunter puts roadworker's inquiry at risk

A deer hunter has inadvertently landed himself in hot water after publishing an article that could jeopardise a homicide inquiry.

The latest newsletter from the North Taranaki Deerstalkers' Association names a local man as the suspect in the shooting of roadworker George Taiaroa in Waikato.

The 67-year-old was killed while manning a stop-go sign at a bridge near Atiamuri, south-east of Tokoroa, on 19 March this year.

The association's secretary, Robbie McGregor, lists a series of questions about the suspect and encourages readers to contact a Tokoroa police officer.

He asks whether readers know what firearms the man owns, whether they have had any run-ins with him, or even heard any rumours about him.

Mr McGregor says he never sought permission from police to publish the questions.

Criminal Bar Association president Tony Bouchier says it could potentially be viewed as obstructing the course of justice if it affected the suspect's right to a fair trial.
