Criticism of royal tour itinerary rejected

Organisers of next week's royal visit have rejected accusations that they are putting the royal couple at risk of a terrorist attack.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge arrive in Wellington on Monday for a nine-day tour before heading to Australia.

The former head of royal protection for the Metropolitan Police, Dai Davies, is critical of the Governor-General's office for publishing a precise itinerary of the royal tour online.

But Internal Affairs' royal visit office media manager, Allen Walley, says publicising routes and public meeting places in advance has been the norm with every royal visit for the past 30 years.

Mr Walley says they try to make it as easy as possible for the public to see the royal couple, and the plans have been checked with Kensington Palace and New Zealand police.

The tour starts in Wellington and goes through Blenheim, Auckland, Hamilton, Cambridge, Dunedin, Queenstown and Christchurch.
