Four rescued after jetboat swamped

A helicopter has rescued four men from the middle of Lake Wairarapa.

Police say they were in a jetboat that became swamped in very choppy conditions just south of Cross Creek, at about 9.30am on Sunday.

They ended up in the water and the Westpac Rescue helicopter winched them out.

A member of the Westpac Rescue Helicopter crew Keith Frewen says they were able to winch the men to safety within 25 minutes.

He says a man who saw the boat sinking from the shore was able to guide them directly to the group.

Mr Frewen says that saved the search crew a lot of time.

He says the men were wearing red and yellow life jackets, which made it easier to spot them.
