GST rise to be added to Rugby World Cup tickets

Rugby World Cup organisers say the rise in GST rise that comes into effect on 1 October has forced them to increase ticket prices.

Rugby World Cup 2011 says the GST increase, from 12.5% to 15%, has been built into the price of all tickets being sold from next month.

This includes the 400,000 match tickets fans can apply for from Friday, as part of the second phase of ticket sales.

Rugby World Cup spokesperson Shane Harmon says the tournament could not afford to absorb the extra cost, which would have amounted to about $2.5 million.

Organisers expect about 90% of the total 1.65 million tickets to be sold.
