A Commonwealth Games silver medalist says if this year's event in Delhi is cancelled, it could signal the end of the Games forever.
Commonwealth Games Federation president Mike Fennell insists the event will go ahead as planned next week, despite problems with the athletes' village and venues.
But New Zealand officials are yet to make a final decision about whether or not athletes from this country will go.
Former distance runner Dick Quax told Nine to Noon it would be devastating for the athletes if they could not attend.
He said that if the Games are cancelled, it would not only be embarrasing for India, but could signal the end of the Commonwealth Games as they are increasingly expensive to hold.
Quax said there are very few countries that can actually afford to host them.
