NZ should be "ashamed" of UN comments on children

The Child Poverty Action Group says New Zealand should be ashamed of a critical United Nations assessment of the country's progress on children's welfare and rights.

The UN Committee on the Rights of the Child has questioned why this country has no children's department or national action plan.

It also wonders why at least one in five children live in poverty.

A spokesperson for the Child Poverty Action Group, Susan St John says the committee has let New Zealand off lightly.

Dr St John says she sees no evidence child poverty or rights are a priority for the Government, and the international body's comments should give it concern.
