Police in Wellington are looking for the man responsible for an attack on a woman on Sunday.

The 21-year-old victim was walking home when she was attacked on Wallace Street in the suburb of Mount Cook at about 1am.

Police say she was approached from behind, was punched to the ground and then punched repeatedly to the head.

She is now in Wellington Hospital with serious bruising and swelling.

The offender is described as a pakeha man in his mid to late twenties, with short, possibly blonde hair.

He was wearing a pale blue and white bomber style jacket.

Police say there is no indication that the man knew the woman, or what motivated the attack.
