$7m upgrade for Kauri Point munitions store

A Defence Force munitions store broken into earlier this year is to get a $7 million upgrade.

The Kauri Point depot on Auckland's North Shore was criticised in a report three years ago that recommended a $14 million upgrade.

In July, a burglar evaded its security systems, stealing ammunition, flares and cartridges.

Defence Minister Wayne Mapp says many of the munitions been relocated to new Army facililties at Waiouru, but Kauri Point is still where munitions are first unloaded and where the Navy keeps munitions.

Dr Mapp says many of the buildings at the depot date back to the 1940s and a redesign will see fewer buildings at the facility, but of a much higher quality. They will be easier to provide security for and a better work environment for staff.

The Australian Defence Force will audit Kauri Point in future.
