Culbert chosen for next Biennale

Artist Bill Culbert has been chosen by Creative New Zealand to represent New Zealand at the Venice Biennale art exhibition in 2013.

Culbert, whose work experiments with light, uses materials such as fluorescent tubes, plastic bottles, wine glasses and suitcases.

A member of the selection panel, Jenny Harper, says the $650,000 budget will cover renting and staffing the pavilion, as well as the cost of creating the artwork itself.

Culbert says he is not sure what his exhibit will look like, but it will most likely be one large installation that could fill the whole pavilion using light as the theme.

Creative NZ has sent an artist to all but one of the biennial exhibitions over the past decade. This year's event, Illuminations, opened on 4 June and continues until 27 November.
