A jury in the High Court at Auckland has taken less than two hours to find an Auckland man guilty of murdering his flatmate with a high-powered air rifle.

Glenn McDonald shot Keith Kahi, who was 44, seven times in their Botany Downs flat in July last year, including twice in the back.

McDonald, who is also 44, claimed he was acting in self-defence.

The court heard that McDonald suspected that a woman he liked was having an affair with Mr Kahi. McDonald was a methamphetamine - or P - dealer and both men were heavy users of the drug.

After the verdict was delivered Mr Kahi's brother, Derek Kahi, said he was relieved. "A lot of things that were said during this trial just weren't true," he said. "They weren't as we knew Keith."

This was the second killing in recent years involving a Monsoon air rifle. The Government has since introduced a law change requiring people who wish to buy the gun to have a firearms licence.

McDonald will be sentenced in December.
