Prisoner assessed as high risk set to be freed

A man dubbed New Zealand's most notorious stalker is due to be released from prison.

Glen Goldberg has amassed more than 190 convictions since 1987, many of them for stalking at least 10 women.

He is at the end of his prison term and is scheduled to be released on Tuesday.

The Corrections Department says he will be subject to conditions that will be monitored until May next year.

The parole board assessed Goldberg in August this year as being high risk.

Forensic psychologist Dr Justin Barry-Walsh says Goldberg seems to have an extreme and enduring pattern of behaviour.

However, he says being at high risk of re-offending is not the same as saying someone will re-offend.

"But six months just isn't a terribly long time to have someone supervised in the community and hope to engage them and make some changes," he says.

The Corrections Department says Goldberg will be held to account if he does not comply with any of the conditions imposed on him and may have breach action taken against him in court.

It says because Goldberg is being released at the end of his sentence it will not be possible to recall him to prison.
