More than $1 million has already been contributed to a fund to help families of the dead miners.

New Zealand Oil & Gas, which has a 29% stake in Pike River Coal, has contributed $500,000, an amount matched by Pike River Coal itself.

Grey District Council has set up the Pike River Miners' Relief Fund, which will be chaired by District Mayor Tony Kokshoorn.

The council says the money will be used to support the families and will be managed by the trust, which will have representation from support agencies on the West Coast.

ANZ and National banks have committed $100,000. Donations can be made at these banks, as well as at any Westpac branch.
