Ministers left scrambling during Question Time

Ministers were left scrambling during Question Time in Parliament on Wednesday as they tried to explain two key government policies.

Education Minister Anne Tolley struggled to explain a significant part of the policy on national standards, while Social Development Minister Paula Bennett was wrong-footed over the Whanau Ora policy.

The Labour Party's education spokesperson Trevor Mallard asked Mrs Tolley how national standards would be moderated between schools.

Under pressure, she attempted to respond but then in frustration made a point of order, saying she should not have to answer the question.

Labour's deputy leader Annette King then read out a description of social policy which Ms Bennett said was an accurate description of Whanau Ora.

Mrs King then pointed out it was the Strengthening Families policy that Labour put in place six years ago when it was in government.
