Councillor appalled at waste-trucking idea

A South Taranaki district councillor says he's appalled Taranaki is again being considered as the dumping ground for North Island oil and gas waste.

Tag Oil and Apache Corporation have just been granted consents for exploratory drilling near Dannevirke.

The same companies also plan to truck waste from an East Coast exploratory well to Taranaki if their drilling application gets approval from the Gisborne District Council.

However, the Taranaki Regional Council says no approval is needed to bring in the waste, as the existing non-notified consents for the land farms are not concerned with where the waste comes from.

A district councillor, Michael Self, who has previously spoken against oil and gas development, says it's turning the region into a dumpsite and he finds the concept abhorrent.
