Auckland Airport says it won't meet some taxi drivers' demands to increase the minimum fare despite them protesting and others going on a partial hunger strike.
About 150 drivers from smaller companies are unhappy that the minimum taxi fare is $20, which they say with waiting times means they are earning only about $5 per hour.
The airport company has responded to a list of demands from the Auckland Taxi Association by saying it will improve facilities for waiting drivers, but will not relocate ranks or increase the minimum fare.
About 50 drivers protested outside the airport's main office on Monday.
Airport spokesperson Richard Barker says other demands, such as raising the minimum fare to $35, are not necessary. He says representatives are meeting with First Union next week to look at how to resolve the dispute.
The Auckland Taxi Association says it will continue protesting overnight.
