Ironman costly for businesses on pier

Auckland business owners who have to close their doors for a council-organised event say they will lose thousands of dollars in revenue.

Auckland events agency ATEED is closing the road, which gives access to the Westhaven's Z pier, for the Asia-Pacific Ironman Championship on Sunday.

Businesses on the pier, which include charter boats and two cafes, will have to close shop from 5am to 11am.

Rod Limbrick, who owns one of the cafes, says his and other companies will lose a lot of money on the two biggest days of the week from between $10,000 to $18,000. "For small businesses, it's quite a kick in the pants."

Mr Limbrick has tried talking to the council, but says his concerns have fallen on deaf ears.

Charter boat business owner Andrew Somers says he will seek compensation if the council does not address their concerns.

ATEED says there will still be pedestrian access to the area and it's a short inconvenience for long-term benefits for the city.

Spokesperson Rachael Carroll says the agency will not be offering any compensation to businesses.
