Hawke's Bay has been shaken on Monday afternoon by a series of earthquakes.
The largest, measuring 5.2, struck at 2.01pm and was centred 25km north-east of Porangahau.
It was followed three minutes later by a shallow aftershock measuring 4.1 and another measuring 3.6 was recorded just minutes later.
Seismologist Bill Fry said people should expect more shakes, but expects these will reduce in the next day or so.
Mr Fry said the quakes are caused by the Australian and Pacific plates converging.
A Radio New Zealand reporter in Napier said the 5.2 shake was felt as a strong, swaying motion.
