A report into the economies in New Zealand regions has confirmed Southlanders have the highest living satisfaction in the country.

The 2014 Regional Economic Activity report released on Thursday says since the global financial crisis, nearly all regions have made good economic progress over the past 12 months.

However, Southland has one of the highest employment rates, the lowest median house price at $190,000 and the lowest rental cost at $11,000 a year.

Southlanders also report the highest living satisfaction of anywhere in New Zealand.

Northland has the lowest employment rate and labour force participation rate in New Zealand.

Auckland has lower than average employment rates and expensive housing.
