Players' mindset, trust key to win

10:34 am on 24 October 2011

All Black coaches are praising the mindset of the team that has pulled off New Zealand's first Rugby World Cup win in 24 years.

The tense match went down to the wire, with the All Blacks eventually winning by just one point.

Coach Graham Henry says the ability to hang in for the 8-7 win was probably something the team couldn't have done two or three years ago.

He says the players are very self-reliant and took ownership of the team.

"They didn't give penalties away and were defensively strong," he said.

Assistant coach Steve Hansen says the team's mindset was at the core of their win.

He says the players believed in themselves and trusted each other

Key hails courage, determination

The Prime Minister has congratulated the All Blacks on what he is describing as their hard earned win.

John Key says their victory was built on courage, determination, grit and great teamwork.

Mr Key was at Eden Park but says he almost missed the last few minutes of the game.

He told Morning Report he was sent down to the field for the post-match formalities about ten minutes before the final whistle.

He says while in the lift he heard a large cheer and was relieved to discover it was not because France has scored.

Mr Key says his heart was pounding as he watched the final three or four minutes of the match.

He says the tournament has been priceless for the country despite the expected $39 million cost to taxpayers.

Relief for NZRU boss

New Zealand Rugby Union chief executive Steve Tew says he is feeling an enormous amount of satisfaction and relief in the wake of the match.

He says Sunday night's final was an important moment in New Zealand's history.

Mr Tew told Morning Report the tournament has been a fantastic Rugby World Cup which has proven to the world that New Zealand can put on a major sporting event and be great hosts.

He says he is proud to be associated with the All Blacks, who played a very difficult game but pulled through.

Mr Tew says the players deserve all the plaudits they will get over the next few days.
