The injured All Black centre Conrad Smith says he's recovering well from surgery to repair a detached retina but will still miss this month's two Bledisloe Cup tests against Australia.

Smith had two operations on his left eye a couple of weeks ago and says he's still unsure at what stage of the Super rugby campaign he suffered the injury.

He's slowly returning to physical activity but says it will up to medical staff to decide when he can return to rugby.

Steve Hansen will name a 28 strong squad for the rugby championship on Sunday.
