The New Zealand cricketers ended a run of five straight test match losses with a well-earned win in the second test against Sri Lanka in Colombo, to share their series 1-1.

But the Black Caps had to wait until the 86th over of the final day before they dismissed the last batsman, the defiant Angelo Mathews for 84 to win by 167 runs in a complete turnaround from their 10 wicket loss in the first test.

The pace bowlers Trent Boult and Tim Southee each took three wickets, Doug Bracewell took two and the debutant leg-spinner Todd Astle one.

It was New Zealand's first test win in Sri Lanka for 14 years.
