A split in the Black Caps captaincy duties appears the likely outcome when the New Zealand cricket side side to tour South Africa is announced later today amidst the ongoing debacle surround Ross Taylor's future in the role.
Taylor's future in the job has been in doubt since it emerged coach Mike Hesson asked Taylor to stand down from the role prior to the test series against Sri Lanka.
Radio New Zealand understands Taylor has been offered the role of test captain with Brendon McCullum set to the take over the captaincy duties for the limited overs side.
Taylor was appointed to the role 16 months ago but with the arrival of new coach Mike Hesson, an avowed McCullum supporter, the relationship between the pair has broken down.
Radio New Zealand has been told Hesson has twice asked Taylor to stand down from the capataincy - once on the eve of the first test loss to Sri Lanka and again before the second test which the Black Caps went on to win, thanks in no small part to Taylor's batting performance.
No matter what is announced today, it can't mask the infighting that currently exists in the squad and will continue to fester, while the bigger issue of player underperformance remains ignored.
New Zealand Cricket also needs to accept blame over the way the matter has been handled and the vacuum it left by not stepping in earlier to try and resolve the problem.
