The New Zealand women's football coach John Herdman has been appointed as New Zealand Football's Director of Football Development.

Herdman steps into the newly created role from his previous position as NZF's Coach Development Manager.

He will continue to oversee the coach development programme but assumes responsibility for player development and creating an overarching game development strategy.

Herdman will also continue as head coach of the Football Ferns - a role he has performed since 2006 - as they work towards the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup and 2012 Olympic Games.
