The Sri Lankan off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan has became the highest wicket-taker in one day cricket internationals.

The 36-year-old claimed his 503rd victim in Sri Lanka's loss to India this morning to move above Pakistan fast bowler Wasim Akram at the top of the list.

Muralitharan, who reached the milestone in his 328th one-day international, is also Test cricket's highest wicket-taker with 769 victims in 125 matches.

He says he's very proud and happy to have achieved the record and it is a great honour for a small cricket nation like Sri Lanka to now hold two bowling world records.
