Liverpool have missed their chance to go two points clear of Manchester United after drawing 4-4 with Arsenal in their English Premier League football match at Anfield.
For the moment, Liverpool lead the premiership on goal difference over United, but the champions have two games in hand, including tomorrow morning's home game against Portsmouth.
Arsenal remain in fourth place, nine points behind the leaders.
The injury-hit Gunners struck first through their Russian striker Andrey Arshavin just before half-time but two goals to the Reds after the break, to Fernando Torres and Yossi Benayoun, had the home team heading to the top of the Premier League table.
But Arshavin had other ideas, levelling matters then putting Arsenal in front with his hat-trick. Torres stepped up to equalise again but the Russian, making up for the loss through injury of Emmanuel Adebayor and Robin van Persie, then notched a fourth.
Benayoun came up with the stoppage time leveller. So Liverpool go top for now with both United and third-placed Chelsea in action tomorrow, and Arsenal keep their unbeaten Premier League run to 19 matches.
Despite having made fourth place and the vital Champions League place look sure, their manager Arsene Wenger hasn't given up hope of winning the title.
Wenger says they don't want to have regrets and winning the title, however unlikely, would be better than merely playing spoiler.
United host Portsmouth and Chelsea face Everton in London.
