Mystics beaten by Firebirds

7:48 am on 28 June 2009

The Northern Mystics blew a seven-goal lead in the final quarter to lose 59-57 to the Queensland Firebirds in Auckland in the penultimate round of the trans-tasman netball competition.

The Mystics, who have won just three matches this year and were already out of play-off contention, were looking for their first ever victory over an Australian side.

Queensland led by three at quarter-time and by two at half-time, before the Mystics grabbed the lead in the third and looked set for a stunning victory until they lost their confidence in the final 10 minutes.

The Firebirds remain fourth on the table.

Today the top of the table Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic are in Perth, while the Pulse host the New South Wales Swifts in Wellington.

On Monday the Southern Steel are at home to the Adelaide Thunderbirds and the Canterbury Tactix are in Melbourne to play the Vixens.
