Just a few weeks short of retirement, the Russian tennis veteran Marat Safin has knocked out his top-seeded countryman Nikolay Davydenko in the opening round of the Kremlin Cup.

Cheered on by a lively Moscow crowd, Safin, a former world number one, won in three sets against Davydenko, who's up to number six in the world rankings following his win last week over Rafael Nadal in the final of the Shanghai Masters.

It's Safin's final appearance at his home tournament.
