The International Tennis Federation has expressed its surprise and disappointment with Andre Agassi's admission in his new autobiography that he experimented with a highly addictive recreational drug in 1997, and later lied to the ATP when he was approached about failing a drugs test.

The winner of eight grand slams has stunned the sport by revealing he took crystal methamphetamine supplied by his drug-using assistant when his career was in free fall and he was having doubts about his impending marriage to actress Brooke Shields.

A year later he began a new training regime that sparked an incredible turnaround in his career, and after winning the French and US Opens in 1999 he became number one in the world.
